Mousa Broch, Shetland Islands |
A broch is a stone roundhouse that was
built around 2000 years ago and found mainly in north and west Scotland. Mousa Broch is the finest surviving Iron Age broch. It is 13.3 metres high. Brochs have an inner and outer drystone wall with stone staircase between. Archeologists and historians are still debating how brochs were roofed and what the inner structures were. Only the stone is left—any wood is long gone. The purpose of brochs is also debated. |
