Foula, Shetland Islands |
Foula is Great Britain's most remote permanently inhabited island.
Almost all the place names in the Shetland Islands are Norse, from the time when it was part of Scandinavia. |
"Bonxie" is the Shetland name for Great Skuas, which are large seabirds.
Foula has the biggest breeding colony in the world. They are aggressive and will fly at your head if you get too close to their nests. Some enterprising person is charging one pound to rent a stick to wave around to protect your head. |
In the absence of a bonxie stick, you can wave your hat around when skuas attack. |
