Callinish stones
Construction of the Callanish Standing Stones took place around 2900-2600 BC. The 13 main stones stand in a circle about 13 metres in diameter,
with a long approach avenue of stones to the north and shorter avenues of stones in the other three directions.
Callinish stones
The stones are from a local type of rock and are from 1 metre to 5 metres high, with an average of 4 metres.
Cutting peat
Like many of the other Western Isles, there are large bogs on Lewis and these men are cutting peat for the fireplace.
Stornoway
Stornoway's inner harbour. The population is about 9000, making it the largest town in the Western Isles.
