Lewis, Outer Hebrides |
Construction of the Callanish Standing Stones took place around
2900-2600 BC. The 13 main stones stand in a circle about 13 metres in
diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north and shorter avenues of stones in the other three directions. |
The stones are from a local type of rock and are from 1 metre to 5 metres high, with an average of 4 metres. |
Like many of the other Western Isles, there are large bogs on Lewis and these men are cutting peat for the fireplace. |
Stornoway's inner harbour. The population is about 9000, making it the largest town in the Western Isles. |
