St. Magnus Cathedral was founded in 1137, and the original structure has been added to over the years.
Major repair and refurbishment works have taken place in the 19th and 20th c.
St. Magnus Cathedral was part of the Norwegian arch-diocese of Trondheim for most of the pre-Reformation years.
Orkney became part of the Kingdom of Scotland in 1468 and the cathedral was put into the care of the people of Kirkwall.
John Rae
The tomb of John Rae, a Scottish doctor who was an Arctic explorer, and in 1854
he learned the fate of the Franklin Expedition which was lost while searching for the Northwest Passage.
