Iona, Inner Hebrides |
A group of Irish monks, led by St. Columba in 563 AD established a
monastery on Iona, which played a major part in the spread of Christianity in Scotland and England. |
Although there are other theories, it is widely accepted that the Book
of Kells, one of Ireland's greatest treasures, was created on Iona. When Vikings started raiding Iona in 794 AD, monks fled to Ireland with relics and other religious treasures. The Book of Kells is an illuminated book of gospels, in Latin. I have seen it in Dublin and the artwork is beautiful. |
